Lunnarp Ecocycle Village

In collaboration with the municipality of Tomelilla, we are developing Lunnarp ecocycle Village – a future-proof residential community in the heart of Österlen in the very south of sweden. A place where generous living qualities, village life, cultivation, and long Mediterranean summers come together.

  • Homes integrated with private greenhouse rooms.

  • A vibrant village community centered around cultivation, a shared orangery, playgrounds, meadows, and greenery.

  • Circular systems of water and nutrients in the greenhouse beds.

  • A semi self-sufficient village in terms of energy, water, nutrients, vegetables, and fruit.

  • A variety of housing typologies for different needs and budgets: single-family homes, terraced houses, and smaller cooperative rental apartments.

  • Local market gardening with professional vegetable cultivation.

A Green Heart

At the center of the village lies a communal green space. Here, residents share allotments, a heated orangery for events, celebrations, and plant cultivation. A playground and outdoor gym are nestled in the shade of the nature park’s trees. Rainwater from roofs, greenhouses, and paved surfaces is collected in a pond, with water flowing through the landscape towards the southwestern low point. Gravel paths weave through meadows rich in biodiversity.

The Village Street

The gables of houses, complementary houses, hedges, and fences orient themselves towards the street, creating an intimate village-like atmosphere. The alternating solid façades and greenhouse façades bring variety and life to the streetscape. Each home is fronted by a small forecourt – providing car and bicycle parking, as well as outdoor spaces for personal use. Private gardens extend behind the fences.

The Pillars of Lunnarp Greenhouse Village:

  • The Green Heart: Shared cultivation areas, a community orangery for gatherings, a playground, and an outdoor gym in the natural park.

  • Greenhouse Rowhouses with Rooftop Gardens: Compact rowhouses with rooftop greenhouse gardens offering Mediterranean climate, views, and the option to expand the living area over time.

  • Greenhouse Apartments: Smaller cooperative rental apartments with generous greenhouse balconies and private ground-floor gardens.

  • Greenhouse Villas / Nature Houses: Detached homes with integrated greenhouses that provide a Mediterranean climate from March to October. Rainwater and greywater are locally circulated and reused in the planting beds. Extended growing seasons enable partial self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables. The heated living areas are planned efficiently to reduce costs, while the greenhouse spaces create generous seasonal living. Here, the rhythm of nature becomes part of everyday life. Energy-efficient systems, local power generation, and low operating costs complete the concept.

  • Market Gardening: A professional organic vegetable farm is integrated into the community, contributing life, activity, and locally grown produce – making the most of the fertile farmland.

  • Biodiversity through Water, Park, and Meadow: Sustainable stormwater management, open water features, meadow plantings, trees, and shrubs create new habitats and a rich biodiversity of plants and pollinators – a stark contrast to today’s monocultural farmland.
